Your explanation does back up what I suspected though, that the lenses somehow "pull" my eyes into seeing better !

What does concern me is that had I not refused to go ahead, the clinic were still fully prepared to carry out the surgery, & I possibly would have ended up with an unsatisfactory result. Author: Guests
Subject: High Script & Conflicting Advice
Posted: 07 March 2010 at 6:46pm

My guess is that you wear Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses and if this is the case 9 days is nowhere near long enough to have left them out. Cessation of RGP lens wear is required for many weeks/months to ensure that the cornea has returned to it's original shape and curvature prior to final assessment for treatrment. During this period both your prescriptiopn and vision can fluctuate quite dramatically and the clinic should be seeing you on a regular basis to monitor any changes.
The reason that you see better soon after your lenses have been removed is because your corneal shape has been temporarily altered by the contact lenses.
Even should you be wearing special soft lenses which correct your astigmatism changes in curvature are likely to occur.
The corneal curvature is influenced by both the mechanical action of the lenses as they move over the surface of your eyes when you blink(RGP) and by corneal swelling during lens wear (RGP and Soft) How well the lenses fit and the oxygen permeability (known as Dk) will have play a significant part in both the temporary warpage of the corneal surface and the rate at which your eyes will return to normal curvature.
Corneal surface curvature changes induced by rigid lens wear used to be very significant indeed many years ago. New lens materials have reduced the effect. However the emphasis here is reduced and not eliminated.
Leaving lenses out for the required minimum period for both assessment and treatment can be inconvenient for many people, however it is an absolute necessity for the former and a critical requirement for the latter.
There are specific corneal conditions which can make for a dramatic difference between your corrected vision with RGP contact lenses compared with that which can be achieved with spectacles (or that during the eye test). However should any such condition be affecting your eyes your Optometrist should/will have noticed during your routine visits.
Good luck with your next assessment.

JP
